A one-of-a-kind sweet shop that transported customers back to their childhood has sadly announced that it will be closing down.

Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe on Denton Street, which is wall-to-wall in sweets accompanied by a 1950s-style interior and exterior, announced on social media that the shop will be closing for good come March 31.

The shop which has been on Denton Holme High Street for over 10 years made the announcement on March 21, citing the 'current climate' making it impossible to continue.

In a post by the owner on Facebook, Carl Gent, said: "I would like to officially announce with a heavy heart that I will be closing the shop on March 31.

"Due to the current climate as it is, it has made it impossible for me to continue with the shop despite my best efforts over the past couple of years to remain open.

"I would like to thank all of my customers past and present for their continued loyalty," he said.

Heartfelt messages were left following the announcement, with many citing the premise as 'the best sweetshop around' - full of 'great customer service'.

One customer wrote: "Sorry to be reading this. We absolutely love the shop and the ice creams are gorgeous. I’m sure I can speak for many in saying you’ll be very missed."

Another said: "You will be missed by many children and adults alike.

"So sorry you have to close and thank you for bringing something a little bit different to Carlisle."

Many messages also wished the owner the 'best of luck' in his future endeavors.

One of our readers, Colin Docker said: "Great lad Carl,  I wish you all the best for the future."

Ye Olde Sweet Shoppe is not the only business offering something a bit different in Denton Holme forced to close due to falling victim to the cost-of-living crisis.

Carlisle street-food eatery, COM-FOR-T at the Atlas Works, was also forced to close its doors after seven and half years around six months ago.
