IT'S the end of an era in Carlisle this weekend as the area officially ushers in a new council and says goodbye to the district, city and county councils.

Carlisle City Council has served the community for almost half a century and has been a constant in the lives of everyone who lives in the borough.

It disbanding on April 1 will mark a historic moment for the people, staff and communities the council has served.

Speaking about the council, leader of Carlisle City Council, Cllr John Mallinson, said: “As the last leader of Carlisle City Council, I would like to thank all the councillors, staff and partners that have supported the city over the years.

“We have much to be proud of. Over the past decades, the city has grown and is now the regional capital.

“It is the beating heart of the Borderlands and an important player in the multi-million pound Borderlands Inclusive Growth Deal.”

The leader also wished to praise officers who would be leaving the council this week.

Jason Gooding, chief executive for Carlisle City Council, corporate director of finance and resources, Alison Taylor and Mark Lambert, corporate director of governance and regulatory services have collectively worked for Carlisle City Council for nearly 80 years.

He said: “Jason, Alison and Mark have been excellent public servants and I’d like to praise them for all their hard work and diligence during their time at Carlisle City Council.

"All have long service records and have supported us through some difficult and challenging periods, including floods and a pandemic.

“They have also led from the front and have put Carlisle into a strong position regionally and nationally.”

From Saturday, April 1 Cumbria’s seven existing councils will be abolished and replaced by two new unitary authorities: Cumberland Council and Westmorland & Furness Council.

Cumberland Council will govern Carlisle, Allerdale and Copeland with all the responsibilities and decision-making powers of both a county council and borough council.
