THOUSANDS gathered in Keswick last night to observe the annual Lakeland Festival of Light.

The event, which is organised every year by The Lakeland Mountain Guides, sees hundreds of people walk up the fell Catbells to light the mountain up in a stunning display.

Organisers have estimated that this year's event held yesterday, April 1, saw an estimated 2,500 people on Catbells with their lights and many more watching from the ground, with organisers saying this year was 'one of the best'.

The Lake District Mountain Guides said: "It has to be one of the best light ups we've done, absolutely incredible!! Big thanks to everyone who helped make this happen."

Every year the event raises money for charity, with 2023's charity partner being The Michelle Jurd Trust, which raises funds for young people to enjoy the outdoors.

This year's charity partner was introduced by Cumbrian chef Fell Foodie Harrison Ward. He said: "It was a perfect evening for the event, clear, dry skies above Catbells and very little wind.

"The turnout was phenomenal and I'm told it was the most successful illumination yet.

"I had the great pleasure of introducing the events charity partner The Michelle Jurd Trust. Set up by Michelle's husband Neil after she tragically lost her life in a road collision.

"Having met in the military, they lived a life of adventure so in tribute Neil wanted to raise valuable funds to help young people enjoy a life of adventure too.

"In recent years the Trust has provided equipment for Duke of Edinburgh students, forest schools, bushcraft and access to canoe experiences via the Bendrigg Trust.

"There were a few too many attendees for me to be cooking on the mountain top on this occasion though."

Donations can still be made online to The Michelle Jurd Trust either directly or by purchasing a photograph of the event from the Lakeland Mountain Guides website.

Organisers have estimated that so far over £8,000 has been raised for the charity with more expected to come in over the coming weeks.
