PREPARATIONS are underway for public screenings of the king’s coronation.

The coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla will take place on Saturday, May 6, followed by a televised pop concert on Sunday, May 7.

Both events will be shown live in two venues within the Cumberland council area - Carlisle’s Victoria Park (part of Bitts Park) and Workington Leisure Centre’s big screen.

All events are free to attend, and timings have been extended on both days to coincide with the confirmed coronation timetable.

As part of the preparations in Carlisle, the Queen Victoria monument in Victoria Park (part of Bitts Park) has undergone six weeks of ‘restorative work’ that has included, according to Cumberland Council, cleaning and polishing the bronze sculpture and relief panels, cleaning and repointing the granite pedestal and steps, and sandstone substructure, plus repainting lettering.

Carlisle’s events will also include food and drink stalls.

The events begin on Saturday at 9am, with the coronation at 11am, with the event coming to an end at 3pm.

They’ll start again on Sunday from 4pm, including the screening of Frozen and The Greatest Showman, and the live screening of the concert, likely to end around 10pm.

The screen will be located near to the Queen Victoria monument in Bitts Park.

The main pedestrian access to the site is via Bitts Park car park or Mayor’s Drive.

People are asked to bring their won seating, a picnic, or to buy food from the stalls.

Bitts Park car park will be closed over the weekend, but some disabled parking provision will be arranged

In Workington, alcohol is forbidden during and on the grounds of the event.

People are asked to being  picnic as there will be no food sold on the day, and to bring their own seating.

The events are the same on Saturday as Carlisle in terms of timing, but on Sunday, only the concert (from 8pm to 10pm) will be shown.
