An Egremont man who has been named Volunteer of the Year has spoken about his joy of winning the award.

David Jutson received the 'Volunteer of the Year' award at Museums + Heritage - a leading sector magazine and events award.

He was joint winner with the Preservative Party of 14-24 year-old volunteers from Leeds Museums and Galleries.

Mr Jutson said: "I feel very humbled about it actually, I didn't expect to get it, I really didn't.

"I was shocked and stunned. I believe Tullie House it's a really good museum, it caters to children, especially children, they're the future and they must find out about their history and heritage, especially in this area.

"They say I worked in the back as a geologist, I was cataloging and helping to catalog the fossils for their computer database that's how I logged up so many hours."

A spokesperson from Tullie House said on social media: "We've said it before, but we'll say it again, David is a fantastic asset to team Tullie.

"He makes the three-hour round trip to the museum twice a week and while here engages visitors on the galleries and also uses his background as a geologist to assist the curatorial team.

"If that wasn't quite enough, he also donates beautiful handmade jewellery, made from local sea glass for us to sell in the shop. Congratulations, David."

The award comes after David dedicated over 400 hours of time to the Carlisle museum over the past year.

The award is also a recognition of the three-hour round trip that David makes to visit Tullie House, where he engages with visitors, uses his background as a geologist to assist the curatorial team, and acts as a training buddy for new volunteers.

In addition, David donates handmade jewellery, crafted from sea glass found at his local beach, to be sold in the museum shop.
