A Carlisle student is set to perform at an iconic London theatre after reaching the final of a national competition.

Next month, a Year 9 student at Central Academy, Sienna Jackson, will take to the stage at Shakespeare’s Globe in London at the final of the national poetry speaking competition, ‘Poetry by Heart’.

The competition, open to all students in Years 3 to 13, encourages young people to develop their creativity and confidence through poetry performance.

Each student chooses a poem, learns it by heart and performs it in school, before a national panel of judges selects a standout few for the Grand Final at Shakespeare’s Globe.

Sienna impressed the judges with her performance of her original poem ‘Life’ which reflects on the complexities of being a teenager in 2023 and the challenges of finding your identity as you grow up.

Speaking about her achievement, Sienna said: “It feels unbelievable to have been selected as a finalist. Performing at Shakespeare’s Globe is a massive opportunity which I never thought I’d be able to have.

“I really enjoy poetry so am very much looking forward to the performance.”

At the final on June 26, Sienna will perform on stage as one of only 100 finalists out of over 2000 entries to the competition.

Alongside their performances, the selected finalists will enjoy a fantastic day of poetry readings from both their peers and special poet guests, as well as a guided tour of the venue.

Dan Markham, Principal of Central Academy, said: “We always strive to provide our students with an exciting array of opportunities to develop their talents and confidence, so I am thrilled that so many took part in this year’s ‘Poetry by Heart’ competition, with all students delivering brilliant performances.

“In particular, many congratulations to Sienna for reaching the competition final and taking up the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to perform her poem on the main stage of Shakespeare’s Globe.

“We are all very excited for her performance and wish her the best of luck.”
