THE custodian of John Lennon’s childhood home and BBC Radio 2 DJ are coming to Carlisle to give a talk about a relatively unknown aspect of the Beatles' career.

Liverpool-born Colin Hall, alongside DJ Bob Harris, will talk at Carlisle’s Old Fire Station about tracks which George Harrison, Sir Paul McCartney and John Lennon penned for other artists including Cilla Black (Step Inside Love), Peter and Gordon (A World Without Love) and Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas (Bad To Me).

Colin recently released a book called ‘The Songs Which the Beatles Gave Away’ which is an extended version of his BBC Radio 2 documentary he made on the same theme with Harris.

Many of the songs written by members of the Beatles were from their very early career when it wasn’t guaranteed that they would go on to international stardom.

"The singles which grace my book were first-time editions of songs that have not been commercially released by The Beatles themselves," Colin told the News & Star.

"For want of a better expression, they are tunes John, Paul and George 'gave away'.

“They were either never issued officially by The Beatles themselves during the existence of the group as an active recording unit or were tunes which they did not take beyond the 'demo' stage.

“They are, therefore, unique recordings, a separate Beatles songbook: a body of work released by other artists fortunate enough to be gifted original tunes, some specifically composed for them, others originally written with The Beatles in mind, but not actually released by the group themselves.

“As such the tunes were eagerly accepted by others, no doubt in the hope that some of that special Beatles’ magic would rub off and propel them into the charts."

Harris and Hall previously worked together on an award-winning documentary called ‘The Day John met Paul’ in 2007 celebrating 50 years since music giants John Lennon and Paul McCartney met at a church fete which Colin was present at.

Colin has been the custodian of John Lennon’s childhood home for 20 years and has guided the likes of Bob Dylan and Yoko Ono round the property.

Tickets for the show on Friday, June 23 are available to purchase for £18 through the Old Fire Station website and Colin’s book is also available to buy online.
