A COUNCILLOR is launching free dog training sessions after witnessing some 'alarming situations'.

Liberal Democrat councillor Chris Wills believes the training will be beneficiary to those living within the Upperby ward, which he says a rise in dog attacks is becoming a hot topic for dog owners in the area.

The sessions will be led by a registered dog trainer and a dog behaviourist and will be held on May 31 and June 1 at 7pm, at Hammond's Pond.

The councillor, alongside his beloved Conaill, will also be roaming out and about in his district with the help of a dog behaviourist to encourage and promote the training of the animals.

"There's been a rise, nationally, in the number of dog attacks on people and other dogs," he said.

"I've witnessed some alarming situations.

"I believe the majority of this is a lack of understanding from dog owners of dog behaviour and a lack of training.

"I've engaged a dog behaviourist who is giving their services free of charge. We will be talking to dog owners in roaming sessions in order to promote better understanding and training.

"When I'm out with Conaill, my dog, I am forever talking to other dog owners about this subject and it really is a big one, one that many shy away from tackling properly," he said.

Cllr Wills and his expert team will also be in attendance at the Upperby Gala at Hammond's Pond to lend advice this bank holiday Monday (May, 29).

Organised by Cumberland Council and supported by the Friends of Hammond’s Pond Group, Upperby Gala will provide free fun for all the family on Monday, May 29, between 1 pm and 4 pm.
