PUPILS from all across West Cumbria were invited to the Houses of Parliament last week, getting a tour of the famous building from a Cumbrian MP.
Children from Seaton Academy, Fairfield School, Seaton St Paul's Junior School, Westfield Primary, Victoria Junior School, and Distington Community School went down to London on Tuesday, May 23 to learn more about the special building and understand how our country is run.
The children were given a bespoke tour of the Houses of Parliament by Workington MP and even invited to watch a live parliamentary debate from the gallery of the House of Commons.
Seaton Academy headteacher Robert Barton said: "What a fabulous trip! It was easier to organise a trip to London Parliament for our oldest school councillors.
"We also collaborated with local schools and it was an absolute pleasure to be joined by Seaton St Paul's C of E Junior School Westfield Nursery and Primary School Distington Community School Fairfield Primary School.
"A huge thank you to Mark Jenkinson MP for a bespoke tour where we were able to see ‘Westminster Hall, enjoy Westminster Balcony by the River Thames, experience a ‘live’ Parliament debate in the viewing gallery and also have a close up view of the Queen Elizabeth Tower! A fabulous time was has by all."
Mark Jenkinson said it was a pleasure to have the children from the constituency in the building to see how Parliament works close up.
Talking after the visit last week, Workington MP Mark Jenkinson said: "Today was a busy and exciting day as I welcomed groups of students from Seaton Academy, Fairfield School, Seaton St Paul's Junior School, Westfield Primary, Victoria Junior School, and Distington Community School to Parliament!
"It was a joy to see their enthusiasm and curiosity as they explored the historic halls and learned about the inner workings of our democracy.
"We had the opportunity to engage in lively discussions, answering their insightful questions about our parliamentary system, the legislative process, and the responsibilities of an MP.
"I want to express my gratitude to the teachers who accompanied the students on this educational journey. Your support and dedication to their development are truly commendable."
