Cumbria has some fantastic young people who deserve recognition – and Heidi Huck and Jack Dickinson are prime examples.
Heidi and Jack are both six years old and attend Egremont ABC. They both undertook their own fundraising challenges during the month of March in support of the boxing club.
A spokesman said: “These two brilliant little kids decided they wanted to raise money for the club after attending classes and enjoying themselves. Due to a change of venue for the club shortly after opening up, we took a hit to our club funds and Heidi and Jack set up their own individual fundraising challenges to help us at the club. Heidi ran a mile every day in March and raised £1,200.
“Jack completed a total of 13 miles on his half term break, walking from Workington to the club premises in Egremont and raised around £600.
“We are blown away that these kids have enjoyed the classes we put on at the club so much that they felt they wanted to help raise funds and would really like to see their efforts recognised. To complete each individual challenge at six years old too is pretty impressive.”
The second nominee is Toby Hosford, a fundraiser for Wigton Food Pantry, which provides access to fresh fruit and vegetables through the FareShare scheme and other initiatives.
A spokesman said: “We are facing many challenges, operational and financial, to survive, so endeavours such as the fundraising undertaken by Toby are very important.
“Toby turns up every week and brightens everyone’s day. Knowing that we rely purely on donations to survive he decided to raise funds by doing a readathon. He arranged sponsors and raised over £765 – a tremendous effort, inspirational and a fantastic example for all of us, both young and old. Toby is a true community champion for someone so young.”
Last but not least is Ro Borgia, nominated by Carlisle Youth Zone. Ro has been attending CYZ for nearly 10 years, during which time they have progressed through all its clubs and are now a much valued member of its music programme, LGBTQ Committee, young leadership programme and events organisation, where recently they spoke in public at the Youth Worker Conference held at the University of Cumbria.
Ro’s recent work within the community has been a stand out to all staff members at CYZ and many other organisations in Cumbria. Changing young people’s lives for the better is one of their passions and they are not afraid to challenge or be challenged by other people’s views on the youth of Cumbria.
