A COMMUNITY is united in grief and shock after it was confirmed that a second teenager has died following an incident in the River Eden in Carlisle in late May.

The 14-year-old, whose identity has not yet been confirmed by Cumbria Police, was flown to hospital in Newcastle in critical condition on May 26.

He passed away 'in medical care' in the early hours of June 15.

He had been one of four boys who had been swimming in the waters of the Eden in the Rosehill area, and had got into trouble.

A bystander, identified recently as Luke Marwood, had heroically tried to help the boys, and had nearly being pulled under himself. Two of the boys were pulled to safety.

A fourth boy, Lewis Michael Kirkpatrick, went missing. His body was found the next day following an 18-hour search by emergency services.

An inquest into his death was opened at Cockermouth Coroners' Court this week.

The news of the second death prompted an outpouring of messages of support.

"Condolences to his family and friends and condolences to Lewis's family too," one said. "Heartbreaking."

"God bless all your family and friends and everyone who knew you... devastating news," said another.

Fans of Carlisle Utd paid tribute to Lewis with a minute's applause in the fifteenth minute of the club's playoff final at Wembley, and now fans are discussing how they might pay tribute to the second boy to pass away.

A spokesperson for the club said they would support the fans in their gesture. They said: "It’s tragic news, and brings sadness to the Cumbrian community as a whole to learn of the loss of such young lives.

"The first home game of every season brings with it our In Memoriam honour roll call, and both young men will feature as part of that as we remember those loved ones who are no longer with us."
