A CARLISLE nursery is celebrating a 'proud moment' after receiving a handwritten letter from Sir David Attenborough.
Rosehill Day Nursery's Wise Owls received the letter from the voice of British nature documentaries on Tuesday, June 20 after writing to Sir David about what they had learned in class about pollution and how they wanted to protect nature.
Jodie Mathews is the Wise Owls room leader and explained how she inspired her class to contact Sir David.
She said: "At Nursery we go with whatever the children are interested in and that is what we teach them and they were really interested in recycling and we celebrated World Ocean Day so we were talking about pollution and when plastic is left in the sea.
"We started a recycling station in our room and then we did a litter pick in the woods and they were recognising when they could see pollution in the water."
"In the class, the children also watched a number of Sir David's videos and began ti draw pictures of him and of pollution, pictures that Jodie was keen to send to the British icon to showcase what the nursery had been learning about.
Fast forward, and the handwritten from Sir David was received, with Jodie explaining her excitement.
She said: "It was exciting.
"We made it exciting for the children and we put it in a bag and we drew the earth on it.
"They were just so excited and they were shouting, 'its David Attenborough in real life' and they were so happy so we have framed it in our room now and we made a display of the work we have been doing about the environment."
Sam Ward, owner of Rosehill Day Nursery expressed her pride at receiving the letter from the British broadcasting legend, biologist, and nature historian.
She said: "It is really exciting.
"It is a proud moment as well for the children because they have been so interested in this topic and the pictures that they sent to David were really brilliant and they used their imagination.
"I am proud that Jodie used her initiative and created something that is not an everyday activity, actually getting a handwritten note from David Attenborough is amazing.
Rosehill Day Nursery is also currently recruiting new staff members.
