A BANNED driver jailed for riding an e-scooter on a busy Carlisle road told magistrates: “I hope you all get run over by a bus!”
Callum Kerr, 27, made the comment at the conclusion of a video link hearing before the city’s Rickergate magistrates’ court, during which he repeatedly used bad language while criticising the court and the police.
The defendant had pleaded not guilty to driving while disqualified and without the appropriate insurance on October 4 last year.
He was convicted after a trial which he did not attend.
The court heard that he committed the two offences as he rode the e-scooter in London Road, Carlisle, despite him being the subject of a driving ban. After hearing the details, magistrates told him that only immediate custody was appropriate.
They jailed Kerr, of Burn Street, Longtown, for 90 days.
The magistrates also imposed a fresh 228-day disqualification but said there would be no separate penalty for the no insurance offence.
In addition, Kerr must pay prosecution costs of £620 and a £154 victim surcharge.
From his prison video booth, Kerr responded by saying to the magistrates: “You’re joking! It’s an electric scooter. The police drive past boys on them every day. I want this referred to the crown court.
“It’s not a fair trial.”
Told that the trial had already taken place, Kerr added: “I want this referred to the crown court. I hope you all get run over by a bus.”
