TWO women have denied taking a car without consent, with one of the women also denying a further charge of stealing more than £132 from the car.

Gemma Earl, 33, and Shona McKie, 22, entered 'not guilty' pleas to the charges on June 26 at Carlisle’s Rickergate Court.

Earl pleaded not guilty to two charges, which were:

  • Theft from a motor vehicle – whereby it is alleged they stole £132.06 from a Skoda Octavia.
  • Taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent.

McKie faced only the latter charge, to which she pleaded not guilty.

The two women, of Well Bank Place in Carlisle, were released on bail, with conditions that they do not contact the person whose car they allegedly stole from and used, and that they do not enter Ferguson Road in Carlisle.

A trial will take place at Rickergate court on August 14.

* An earlier version of this report stated that McKie was 19. This has been corrected to 22. In the third paragraph, it also stated that Earl pleaded guilty to the two charges, contrary to the first two paragraphs. This has now been corrected.
