FOLLOWING on from our series of looking back at our villages and towns throughout the decades, we now look at our city throughout the years. Today, we land in Carlisle during the early 70's.

Carlisle in the early 1970s was a city of contrasts. The bustling industrial hub, with just over 70,000 residents, was home to thriving industries like manufacturing, textiles, and engineering.

However, the city was also facing significant challenges, with high unemployment rates among youth, and traditional industries struggling to keep up with an increasingly globalized market.

Despite this, there was room for hope. Carlisle United Football Club was enjoying a period of success, and the cultural scene thrived, featuring regular music and theatre performances.

As the city faced obstacles, it showcased its resilience and determination to adapt to a changing world. Overall, the early 1970s proved a time of hope and difficulty for Carlisle.
