This Friday (July 7), Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life will be handing over its social media channels to young people.

The national Kids in Museums Digital Takeover Day event will see young people take over the social accounts of museums, galleries, historic homes, archives and heritage sites across the UK.

Supported by Arts Council England, Kids in Museums has held an annual digital takeover since 2014.

The charity wants to empower young people and help them learn digital marketing skills, as well as support museums to engage younger audiences.

Last year, over 50 museums were taken over and the hashtag #TakeoverDay even trended on Twitter.

At Cumbria’s Museum of Military Life, young people will be using their digital skills to share their very own exhibitions linked to the theme of ‘Let’s Play,’ curated as part of their work experience placements.

“We’re really excited to handover the Museum’s social media as part of Digital Takeover Day.

"It’ll be interesting to see how the young people use our collection to engage our online audience," said Rachel, learning & events assistant.

“I’m most excited about comparing the objects from the past with things that I used to play with when I was younger. It’ll be fun to share this with the wider museum world,” said Greg, a work experience student.
