WITH Carlisle ranking as the third-best city for new businesses, according to data from Companies House, we thought we'd get excited about some of the new businesses, along with some potential ones, that may be setting up shop.
In the last five years, 16.85 per cent of new companies in the city have shut their doors, with 1,490 businesses opening and only 251 closing.
There are plenty of plans in motion to revive former businesses within the centre.
All applications can be viewed through the Cumberland Council Planning portal.
Turkish Restaurant
One proposal seeks to turn the former Oak Tree Animals Charity shop on 68 Lowther Street into a Turkish restaurant.
Plans were registered with Cumberland Council's planning authority on April 6, on behalf of Mr Mintimur.
The restaurant plans look to restore a 'derelict' building that has been vacant for a number of years - adding to the 'city's commercial health'.
Cafe
The beloved I Love Cafe in Carlisle recently announced its relocation to a prominent city-centre spot, the former Coffee Genius building at St Cuthbert's Lane.
On an Instagram post, it was announced that the cafe will open on Tuesday, July 11, at 9am.
Wine Bar
Back in April, plans were submitted to change the use of former commercial premises to a wine bar at number 4 on The Crescent.
It was submitted by JMC National Limited.
Tattoo Parlour
Last month, proposals were put forward to the council to change the use of a former nail saloon to that of a tattoo studio near the city's cathedral.
Plans for 39, Castle Street, were put forward by Jess Harris Art.
STACK
STACK Carlisle is set to open next year, creating 'a new and exciting chapter for leisure in the city', after the scheme was granted planning permission earlier this year.
Councillors gave the green light to the plan to create a multi-million pound 'container village' at the site of the former Her Majesty’s Theatre, which will transform part of the Lowther Street Car Park, was approved in May this year.
Cafe
The company Loungers is moving into the glass-fronted unit on English Street that was formerly a Topshop branch.
A spokesperson from Loungers said the new 'Bordo Lounge' will create 25 jobs and will open in November 2023, serving breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner and drinks, including full kids’, gluten-free and vegan menus, served in a 'relaxed, welcoming space'.
Burger King
Cumberland Councillors approved plans for a new Burger King back at the beginning of June.
The move will see the construction by Custodian Real Estate Investment Ltd of a new restaurant/takeaway, drive thru and customer car park on a 2,500 sq. ft. site at St Nicholas Gate Retail Park on London Road. .
Takeaway
In February, we revealed an application that looks to change the use of the former Jack Horseman motorcycle repair shop on London Road, next to The Cranemakers pub, in the Botchergate area, to that of a new takeaway.
The application has been submitted by Gray Associates Limited, on behalf of Rajya Laxmi Pathak.
