Cumberland Council has announced an investment of more than £60,000 for maintenance works at Robert Ferguson Primary School in Carlisle.

The Denton Holme primary school will have its window lintels replaced and associated works, as part of Cumberland Council’s Prioritised Capital Maintenance programme.

The existing lintels will be replaced with a combination of new fair-faced reinforced concrete units and purpose-made composite units, blending in with the design of the existing building.

The works are due to begin in October and will be completed by the end of 2023.

Councillor Elaine Lynch, Cumberland Council’s executive portfolio holder for lifelong learning and development, said: "I am delighted that Cumberland Council is investing over £60,000 for maintenance works at Robert Ferguson School.

"This commitment demonstrates our dedication to fostering a nurturing environment for students and educators.

"By prioritising the upkeep and enhancement of our education facilities, we are actively paving the way for a brighter future for our young people," she said.

Graham Frost, headteacher of Robert Ferguson Primary School, said: “We are very grateful for Cumberland Council’s commitment to preserving this wonderful, school building with these much-needed repairs.

“The building, which first opened its doors to pupils in 1904, with its distinctive chimney (architect Sir Walter Brierley was inspired by an Italian bell tower), has many beautiful features, including the lintels which are to be sympathetically replaced," he said.
