THREE firefighters from Cumbria Fire and Rescue made the county proud in the British Firefighter Challenge in Manchester over the weekend.
The firefighter challenge is an annual sporting event which sees firefighters from across the country and Europe push themselves to the limit in a series of firefighting related challenges in front of an expectant crowd.
The day also raises important funds for the Firefighters Charity which offers specialist, lifelong support for members of the UK fire services community.
Three firefighters from Cumbria, Ella Stevens, Jen Forster and Danni Cannar, competed and represented the county with pride in completing the tricky challenge.
The course included various strength and fitness challenges in a timed circuit- including climbing the stairs to the third floor of a drill tower and hauling a length of hose aloft using a general purpose line, hose running, making up a length of hose, a weighted farmers carry, a section where contestants have to hit a weight along a track with a sledgehammer, and a 70kg casualty drag.
All of these physical tasks must be completed whilst wearing full fire kit and a breathing apparatus set.
A spokesperson for Carlisle East Fire Station said: “Congratulations to Firefighters Ella Stevens, Jen Forster and Danni Cannar, who have all today competed in, and completed The British Firefighter Challenge, in Manchester.
“Danni completed the course in 5 minutes 59 seconds, Jen completed it in 4 minutes 23 seconds, and Ella completed the course in 4 minutes 14 seconds.
“A great effort by all - well done ladies!”

Ella Stevens’ time meant that she was the fifth fastest female finisher at the competition, and she came third in the 30 to 39 female age category.
All three of Cumbria’s entrants then took part in the female four-person team relay, and came third overall in more success for Cumbria Fire and Rescue service.
