Cumberland Council is taking action against the growing weed problem in the area - with Carlisle seeing a significant increase.

Favourable weather conditions have contributed to extensive plant growth, including weeds.

And a delayed start in weed spraying occurred due to negotiations with the supplier.

The Carlisle area has undergone a comprehensive spraying, and the Highways teams, in collaboration with Cumberland Council's Street Scene teams, are prioritising their efforts in various areas to address the extra weed growth.

These areas include; main approaches into the city, around the Castle and city centre streets, Denton Holme, Harraby, Stanwix, Botcherby, Kingstown, Morton, Bell Vue, Raffles, Currock, Upperby, Longsowerby.

The weed spray used by the council is safe for the environment, animals, and human health.

However, its effectiveness on weeds might be lower compared to products used in private gardens.

This means that it may take longer to see desired outcomes and there is an elevated risk of dilution during unfavourable weather conditions.

Once the additional weed removal work is completed, a final spray will be conducted across the entire city.

Councillor Denise Rollo, Cumberland Council’s Executive Portfolio Holder for Sustainable, Resilient and Connected Places, said: “I would like to extend my thanks to the residents, particularly those in Carlisle, for their continuous patience and support as we address the weed issue in the area. The weather has been conducive to rapid plant growth, and our delayed start in weed control has allowed them to flourish.

“Our dedicated highways and street scene teams are aware of the challenges and have devised a comprehensive plan to tackle the unsightly weeds. While the weed killing solution, we use may take longer to show results compared to domestic products, it prioritises environmental safety, the well-being of our community, and our pets. Your understanding is greatly appreciated as we work towards a weed-free environment for all”.
