IN this week's nostalgia, we have collated together memories from primary and junior schools in our local areas.

One school featured is St Begh's Junior School with history dating back to its establishment in 1875.

Originally known as the "Higher Grade School," the school was built to accommodate the increasing number of children in the area who were in need of education. The building was situated on Lowther Street and consisted of several classrooms, a playground, and amenities for both students and teachers.

Over the years, as the school population grew, the building began to deteriorate, and a decision was made to construct a new school on the site of St Begh's Catholic Church, which was situated nearby.

In 1975, the new St Begh's Junior School was opened, offering modern facilities and a larger capacity to accommodate more students.

St.Gregory's and St.Patrick's School was formed in 1985 by the merger of two separate schools, St.Gregory's School and St.Patrick's School.

St. Gregory's School was originally established in 1911 by the Sisters of Mercy and provided education to Catholic children in Whitehaven.

St.Patrick's School, on the other hand, was founded in 1967 to meet the growing demand for Catholic education in the area.

In 1985, due to various factors such as declining enrollment and changes in educational policy, the two schools decided to merge and form St.Gregory's and St.Patrick's School.

Bransty School has a history dating back to the late 19th century. The original school building was constructed in 1883. It was initially known as the Whitehaven Colliery Boys' School.

Over the years, the school expanded and underwent various changes. In 1989, the school was amalgamated with Meadowbank Junior School and became known as Bransty Primary School.
