A woman will take on a unique mountain trek challenge to raise money for a llama charity.

Nicole Benson, part of the team at the alpaca and llama charity The Woolly Army, based in Cumbria.

Nicole will walk 11 miles over steep mountains, dressed as a llama, while carrying the equivalent of the maximum weight a llama can carry.

On why she’s doing it, she said: “It's all because of the rain.

“The barn located in our newest site at Basecamp North Lakes is in desperate need of repair, and during periods of heavy rainfall, every other day, thanks Cumbria, the entire barn floor becomes flooded and is completely unusable for storing food and keeping our lovely alpacas and llamas safe and dry.

“Repairing this would allow us more indoor space for the Woolly Army during the rainy seasons, allow us to store more food, reduce our food spending, and most excitingly, will enable us to offer indoor meet and greets so you can hang out with the Woolly Army no matter the weather.”

She will walk the Newlands Horseshoe, an 11-mile stretch over the peaks of Robinson, Dale Head, Dalehead Tarn, High Spy, Maiden Moor and Catbells with an elevation gain of 1095m.

To raise the funds for the barn repair, Nicole will be hiking this with a 22kg weighted jacket, which, taking into account her body weight, is the equivalent of the maximum weight that a llama can carry while trekking, while wearing a costume.

The funds raised will go directly towards resurfacing the barn floor and implementing new drainage systems to keep the rain outside filling up the lakes where it belongs, reclaiming the space for food storage, meet and greets and indoor safe space for The Woolly Army.

A spokesperson from the charity said: “Nicole has been on our team for three years and is one of our two awesome team co-ordinators, and a lead guide.

“Her day-to-day work involves delivering outstanding alpaca walks and llama treks to our visitors, making sure the animals in our care are all safe and happy, and also using her personal trainer skills to keep us all in line.

“Alongside her work with us she is also a part time PT and physio, so she is well used to training and pushing herself to new goals.”
