Construction of the multi-million-pound Carlisle Southern Link Road is progressing despite the heavy rain in July.

Work on the project has seen a surge in activity along the route, with the earthworks contractor creating ponds and temporary roads to facilitate the construction process.

The project is an 8km road that will include four new roundabouts, five cycle bridges and four road bridges and a cycle path along the northern side along its full length.

The road will connect Junction 42 of the M6 with the A595 at Newby West - helping deliver 10,000 new homes to St Cuthbert's Garden Village.

One of the key achievements in the past month has been the commencement of the construction of two out of the nine large bridge structures that will be a part of the road.

In addition, a series of crossing points have been created along the route to ensure that construction traffic remains on site and minimise the impact on local traffic.

Efforts have also been made to protect and enhance the environmental habitats in the surrounding areas of the site.

The focus now is on the installation of over 40km of drainage, as well as additional earthworks.

So far, over 30,000 tonnes of earth have been moved in preparation for the road.
