Carlisle Cathedral would show its support for Ukraine with a day of prayer on the country's Independence Day this week.
The cathedral invited people from the local area to visit on Thursday, August 24, with the daily prayer at 12:30 pm dedicated to the people of Ukraine by Revd Canon Michael Manley.
August 24 marks Independence Day in the Eastern European country, which has been celebrated annually since 1991, although the current war with Russia has left the people of Ukraine with little to celebrate.
The Reverand offered out his prayers to the people of Ukraine during the 30-minute session and called not just for the laying down of weapons, but for a long-lasting peace.
He said: "As in most situations when we’re suffering, it’s really important that you know that other people are supporting you and thinking about you and upholding you. That’s why on this day, when they celebrate their independence in Ukraine, we’ve decided to mark this day and let them know that we are, as best we can, standing with them."
Visitors were also invited to light a candle to show their support for the people of Ukraine, as the war continues to damage the lives of millions.
