A 'preferred developer' has been chosen to progress negotiations for the redevelopment of the former Central Plaza site.
The 'Citadel View' site was previously home to the Grade II Central Plaza Hotel which was demolished and cleared during 2020 after falling into disrepair in 2011.
Cumberland Council, previously Carlisle City Council in partnership with property consultant CBRE, sought proposals to redevelop the ‘Citadel View’, at the Victoria Viaduct in March earlier this year.
The transfer of the site to the chosen developer was discussed at a meeting of the Cumberland Council's Executive on September 5.
The identity of the developer has not been revealed at this time.
A Cumberland Council spokesperson said: "A decision has been taken by the council’s Executive to progress negotiations with a preferred developer for the former Central Plaza site.
"Submissions were sought from potential developers earlier this year and UK Government Future High Street funding has been secured to help facilitate the redevelopment of the site.
"The former Central Plaza site has been effectively ownerless for several years and is subject to escheat to be dealt with by The Crown Estate.
"Positive discussions have been held with the Crown’s advisors to ensure this important and prominent site is brought back into use.
"It is anticipated that the appropriate investor would be the one recommended by the Council following our consideration of any proposals/expressions of interest received.
“Ambitious plans are also in place for other parts of Carlisle city centre with funding secured for Carlisle Railway Station and the Citadels," they said.
In addition to the Central Plaza site, progress is also being made on the Carlisle Station Gateway Project.
The project comprises several key components, including the partial pedestrianisation of Court Square.
The next phase of the Carlisle Station Gateway Project consists of improvements to the Water Street / James Street junction, with works having begun on August 29.
Proposals are also being assessed on potential Devonshire Street plans following a public consultation.
