MONEY seized from criminals from Cumbria Police is being reinvested into the community, helping two Carlisle boxing clubs expand their services.

Currock House Amateur Boxing Club and Carlisle Villa Amateur Boxing Club have both benefited from the Police Property Fund, which has allowed them to attract more users and offer new sessions, as well as develop 'girls only' sessions.

Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner, Mike Johnson, praised the clubs for providing a safe space for young people as well as opportunities to 'broaden their horizons'.

"It was clear from my visits and meeting some of their younger members, that both boxing clubs are providing local children with a safe space to go, meet different people and develop new skills," he said.

"The coaches are more than trainers to the children, they are role models, offering a structured and constructive activity, steering them away from bad habits and unhealthy social groups."

Gary McGarvie, head coach at Currock House Amateur Boxing Club, said the help the funding has given has been 'fantastic', stating that it has allowed the small club to buy new equipment, hold taster sessions for free, and provide refreshments.

"Anyone that wants to come to watch the boxing is welcome, come off the streets, be safe, and hit a bag, you are always welcome.

"We don't have set rules for boxers only, anyone that wants to come through the door can participate," he said.

The funding will also be used to provide free sessions for three months as part of the club's "behaviour change program" for those who come to the attention of the police.

"Back in April, police said there were a few people going off the straight and narrow and they said they were interested in boxing. We had one lad come who was finding life a bit difficult, the police provided three months of free training for him and the lad is still coming now," Gary said.

The club is also planning to set up a 'mother-and-daughter boxing keep fit' class and will be running taster sessions in October.

Head coach Jonny Brennan from Carlisle Villa Amateur Boxing Club expressed his satisfaction with the funding, which has enabled the club to expand the gym and purchase new equipment, including four new heavy bags.

Currock House Amateur Boxing Club holds classes on Mondays and Wednesdays for beginners and boxers, with further details available on their Facebook page.

Carlisle Villa Amateur Boxing Club also offers women-only sessions on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Interested individuals are encouraged to get in touch with the clubs through their respective Facebook pages for more information.
