A huge tribute was paid to Cumbrian motorsport owner Paul Bird on the day his Superbike team claimed an emotional victory.

Racers, officials, friends and family members gathered at Oulton Park to remember Mr Bird, who passed away recently aged 56.

The Langwathby-based businessman was the British Superbike Championship's most successful owner and a hugely admired figure in the sport.

After hundreds of people from the BSB paddock community gathered behind images of tribute to Mr Bird - with a number of bikes also on show charting his team's success over the past 30 years - his BeerMonster Ducati team dedicated victory to him in their first outing since his death.

Glenn Irwin gave the team a fairytale triumph with his seventh victory of the season, finishing in front of team-mate Tommy Bridwell.

Irwin said the win, which extended his lead in the championship, was for "the Birdman", whose funeral is to be held on Friday.

He said: “It’s so nice to lead the race from start to finish, or at least most of it and the plan worked.

"I’m humble about the victory as we get on so well and it’s tough fighting your teammate for the title.

"At the same time, we’re professional riders who want the same thing so you must take whatever advantage you can get. We still have two more races to go but I’m feeling confident and that one’s for the Birdman.”

Mr Bird's company, Paul Bird Motorsport, said they wanted to thank everyone for their support since his passing.

The former rally driver and motocross rider died suddenly on September 1 after a short time in hospital with illness.

A private funeral service will be held at Eden Valley Crematorium on Friday, September 22 at 12.30pm.

It will be followed by a gathering at Roundthorn Country House, Penrith.
