A PROMINENT building in Carlisle's city centre has been sold at an online auction.
Victory House, a six-storey 27,000 sq ft building facing the Victoria Viaduct, has been sold for £466,000 via property auctioneer, Pugh.
The building suitable for a range of mixed commercial and residential uses was given a guide price of £350,000 and appeared in Pugh’s online auction on September 20.
Prior to the auction, the property was being marketed by Walton Goodland and was accepting offers in the region of £675,000 for its freehold interest.
The entire building is currently vacant, with the lower levels of the property having been unused for many years, making up for basic storage space.
Located opposite the site of the flagship £78m University of Cumbria Citadels campus that is due to open in 2026, Edward Feather from Pugh Auctions said: " This historic property has great potential for a sensitive conversion to provide accommodation for the rapidly growing numbers of students attending the University of Cumbria as it embarks on an ambitious expansion programme over the coming years.
"This is a fantastic and rare development opportunity and, subject to gaining the relevant planning consent, one that could see Victory House play an important role in the university and in the economy of the city itself.”
In line with the regeneration of Victoria Viaduct, a 'preferred developer' has also been chosen for the adjacent land next to Victory House.
The 'Citadel View' site was previously home to the Grade II Central Plaza Hotel which was demolished and cleared during 2020 after falling into disrepair in 2011.
The transfer of the site to the chosen developer was discussed at a meeting of the Cumberland Council's Executive on September 5.
The identities of both developers have yet to be revealed at this time.
