RAILWAY enthusiasts have gathered to get a glimpse of an iconic steam locomotive at a local station.
A large crowd of railway enthusiasts gathered along with the traveling public at Carlisle station to look at the A4 Pacific Steam Locomotive, Sir Nigel Gresley.
The historic locomotive arrived at platform 3 of the city's station hauling a Fellsman charter from Crewe at just after 12.50pm on Wednesday, September 20.
The engine, in its blue livery, was built in Doncaster in 1937 and is named after the locomotive designer of the same name, who designed many of the steam locomotives of that era, including the Flying Scotsman, which was also present on the Settle and Carlisle line earlier in the month.
In June 1956, the locomotive hauled the Royal Train from King's Cross to York with Queen Elizabeth II on board.
After passengers had disembarked, the train was taken for servicing at Upperby, before returning to the station and leaving with the return leg of the journey about two and half hours after its arrival.
Both legs of the journey took place along the Settle and Carlisle railway line.
