THE shutters closed for the final time at the Wilko’s store in Cockermouth over the weekend, as staff said an emotional goodbye after almost two decades in the town.
The store closed on Sunday, August 24 as Wilko fell into administration last month after it was unable to secure a rescue deal after coming under pressure from weak consumer spending and debts to suppliers.
The retail chain opened in the Lowther Went Shopping Centre on South Street on August, 4 2004 after Walter Wilson closed their base in the town.
Store manager Billy Boal said: “We have been trading this site for over 19 years to the Cockermouth community and unfortunately closed our doors for the last time on September 24.
“It’s been an extremely difficult and emotional roller coaster for the hard-working team that work in this store with me.
“We want to thank all our customers for the loyalty they have shown us, and we are extremely thankful for all the support you have shown us in the difficult times we have experienced recently.
“I want to thank all of my team for the all the hard work and commitments in challenges we have had and what a team you all are.
“Any employer should absolutely snap you up and hopefully this will be very soon.
“I want to personally thank you all for making my time in Cockermouth one of my best experiences working for Wilko’s.”
Billy also extended his thanks to the Bush in Cockermouth who gave the team two free bottles of Prosecco so staff could have a farewell drink together after the store closed yesterday.
Customers were invited to write their own messages and memories of the store on a message board in the shop.
One customer said: “Such a sad day. Wishing you all the very best for the future. Thank you for everything.”
Another message read: “I have had the best 19 years with the Wilko crew. I will miss you all. Once a red always a red.”
The closure of the store will come as a loss to the town with Wilko’s taking up one of the biggest retail units in Cockermouth.
