Avanti West Coast has warned passengers not to travel from Carlisle on the West Coast Mainline ahead of expected ‘extreme weather conditions’.

Thousands of Carlisle United fans were expected to use the line to get to their fixture against Bolton Wanderers.

Some trains are still scheduled to run from Carlisle to Preston but services are expected to be very busy.

A spokesperson said “Due to extreme weather conditions on Saturday 7 October, customers travelling between Scotland and Preston are advised not to travel.

“There will be no services north of Preston, and as a result other services across the network will be significantly delayed.

“Anyone who cannot travel as a result, will be able to use their ticket on either Sunday 8 or Monday, October 9, although services will be busier than normal.

“Customers can also claim a full, fee-free refund from their point of purchase.

The Bolton Wanderers fixture was set to see one of the biggest Carlisle United away day attendances in recent year with more than 4,000 buying a ticket ahead of kick off.

Carlisle United fan and TV presenter Helen Skelton said: “Good luck travelling Carlisle United fans - loving how many are making the trip.

“Just warning you there’s a lot of train cancellation, car share might be an option.”
