A VISITOR to Carlisle stole cosmetics worth almost £100 from a city centre store while he was drunk, the city’s Rickergate court heard.

Clement Moyo, 45, committed the offence after going into Superdrug in The Lanes Shopping Centre at 1pm on July 17, drawing the attention of security staff because of the amount of cosmetics goods he had gathered before trying to leave.

The value of the goods he took - which were recovered - was £95.92.

After he was detained, staff from the city’s B&M store arrived on the scene and confirmed that Moyo had stolen goods worth £60 three days earlier.

The defendant, from Meadowpark Street, Glasgow, admitted two thefts.

John Smith, defending, said the defendant had been visiting friends in Carlisle and his first theft from B&M  – of four mobile phone power units – was committed because his phone was out of charge, and he wanted to use it.

The power units were not recovered.

When he stole from Superdrug, said Mr Smith, Moyo was 'intoxicated,' said Mr Smith.

“He picked up a large quantity of make-up and that’s what drew the attention of security staff,” said the lawyer. “He can’t remember too much about it.”

The defendant currently had two jobs – one as a Just Eat delivery man and one in a car wash, earning him a total weekly income of £250.

Deputy District Judge Jayne Byers fined Moyo - £40 for the B&M theft and £80 for the second theft, when the goods were recovered.  He must also pay B&M £60 compensation, £85 costs, and a £48 victim surcharge.
