OVER 100 people were in attendance as the UK's 'first' official asylum seeker football team secured their first wins following competitive matches against Cumbria's NHS staff.

The weather was on their side, as the rain held off, providing perfect playing conditions as two teams from Hilltop United FC went head-to-head against the international NHS football team.

A crowd of around 50 people turned out to cheer on the teams.

In the closely contested tie, Hilltop United secured wins with scores of 2-1 and 1-0.

Chris Middleton, the manager and a volunteer with CRAG, said: "It was a very enjoyable day.

"56 people came from Whitehaven, they even brought music, turning the football match into a delightful music festival for the very first time," he said.

Hilltop United FC, officially recognised by the Football Association (FA) in September, embodies a diverse and culturally rich blend of 10 different nationalities.

"We're trying to build something here.

"It's more than just football, we're not causing trouble, we want to have fun, football is an international language and everybody gets on with everybody and that was showcased.

Chris emphasised that the team's mission goes beyond football,: "It's as much about mental health.

"The lads feel really good about themselves when they play, they drew the first two matches so two wins now, it's an improvement to carry forward," Chris said.

Supported by UNISON, the unique match was aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion for Cumbria's diaspora communities and also coincides with Black History Month.

A spokesperson from UNISON said: "UNISON is proud to be supporting the event and CRAG.
