FIREFIGHTERS have rescued people from a car trapped in flood water near Carlisle.
Members of Carlisle East, West, and Penrith fire stations were deployed to Wreay to rescue a woman and child using an inflatable raft and water rescue equipment.
Elsewhere in Carlisle, traffic has been very slow this morning because of flood water on the roads.
Busy routes, such as Dalston Road from Carlisle to Dalston, have been affected.
Water accumulated on Dalston Road near the crematorium and traffic was flowing very slowly through it this morning.
On top of this, there are temporary traffic lights on the same road which are delaying journeys further.
A spokesperson from Carlisle East fire station issued the following advice as more heavy rain is forecast:
- Do not drive through flood water- every time there is heavy rain we end up having to rescue motorists who drive through deep water. If in doubt, turn around.
- If you do need to travel, make sure you have waterproof warm clothing with you, and a charged mobile telephone.
- Do not enter flood water- in recent times we’ve even had to rescue someone who tried to cycle through a very flooded Rickerby Park
- Do not enter flood water to try and rescue livestock. If your animals are in danger, ring 999. We have the resources to help, do not risk your own life.
- Do not stand on bridges or riverbanks to view or take videos of the fast-flowing water.
A spokesperson from Cumberland Council said earlier this afternoon: "Following the recent Storm Babet, flash flooding has occurred in various parts of the Cumberland area.
"Our highways teams are diligently working to ensure road safety for all of us."
Scalegate Road (toward Newbiggin) in Carlisle is currently closed due to flash flooding.
Work is underway for flooding on Dalston Road, Bush Brow, Wreay near the Motorway Bridge, and the Nature Reserve on Kingmoor Road in Stanwix.
The council added: "Please be aware that river levels are high, and flood boards are being installed in flood-prone areas.
If you plan to drive, check your route in advance and exercise caution due to potential flash floods, fallen trees, or debris.
"Please report road issues by contacting the Highway's Hotline at 0300 373 3736."
