A MAN from the Carlisle area has fallen from a bridge after emergency services attended the scene.
Emergency services attended to the incident at the River Eden at Wetheral railway bridge yesterday evening (October 22).
Police were called to a report of concern for the welfare of a man on the bridge at around 8.05pm.
A spokesperson from Cumbria Police said: "Officers attended and the man – in his 40s and from the Carlisle area - was found on the bridge, on the wrong side of the railings.
"Despite the efforts of emergency services at the scene, the man fell from the bridge, shortly after 9pm.
"Efforts are ongoing to locate the man, who has not been seen since entering the water.
"As well as Cumbria Police, the incident has been attended by other emergency services including Cumbria Fire and Rescue and Penrith Mountain Rescue. A police helicopter also attended to aid with the search.
"Whilst efforts remain ongoing, people are asked to avoid the area.
"In accordance with IOPC guidelines, Cumbria Constabulary has informed the Independent Office for Police Conduct," they said.
In an update at 5pm today, October 23 Cumbria police said: "Extensive multi-agency searches have been carried out in the area today.
"We will continue to monitor water levels to aid the effectiveness of the search."
