POLICE are still searching for a man who remains missing after falling off a bridge and into water.
The man, from the Carlisle area and in his 40s, fell from a railway bridge in Wetheral on the evening of October 22.
Police were initially called at 8.05pm about a concern for the man’s welfare.
The man was found on the bridge on the other side of the railings, and, despite the efforts of the emergency services, he fell shortly after 9pm, entering the water below.
Since then, he has not been found.
As well as the police, the incident was attended by other emergency services including Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service, Penrith Mountain Rescue, and there was a police helicopter in operation with a spotlight to try and find him.
"Whilst efforts remain ongoing, people are asked to avoid the area. In accordance with IOPC guidelines, Cumbria Constabulary has informed the Independent Office for Police Conduct," they said after an initial enquiry yesterday (October 23).
Searches have continued since then, concluding yesterday evening and starting again this morning (October 24).
A spokesperson from the police said they continue to ask people to avoid the area to give those searching the space to carry out their work.
