A PLANNING application has been submitted for the demolition of buildings on a site that previously housed an engineering firm to make space for housing and commercial units.

The former Mitchell Dryers Limited site currently occupies a 2.5-acre block bordering Denton Street and Lorne Street in the Denton Holme area of Carlisle.

The firm makes and supplies industrial dryers for the food, chemical, mineral and pharmaceutical industries, and has a history dating back to 1859.

In 2016, the firm went into administration. It now operates out of Kingmoor Park.

The demolition aims to facilitate the restoration of the site.

The proposed demolition has been put forward to Cumberland Council by McKnight and Son Builders on October 23.

If plans are given the green light, the demolition of the main buildings is anticipated to commence on June 1, 2024, with restoration to follow.

The applicant proposes to submit a planning application to redevelop the site in January 2024 for homes and some 'commercial units'.

"Detailed plans are still being prepared; however, it is envisaged that the scheme will comprise predominantly residential units with some commercial units occupying part of the site’s frontage along Denton Street.

"The restoration of the site has been influenced by its planned redevelopment.

"The restoration will involve levelling the site and removing any areas of hardcore in order to provide a safe and unobtrusive surface ready for the site’s redevelopment," the demolition statement reads.

Any representations about the proposal can be made to Cumberland Council on the planning portal.
