IN this section of nostalgia, we are looking back at Whitehaven throughout three decades - the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Just like many parts of Britain, Whitehaven was affected by the closure of many coal mines in the 70s and 80s owing to the significant changes and decline in the mining industry.

This decline had a significant economic and social impact on the town which was known for its mines since the 17th century.

The nearby Sellafield nuclear site continued to be a major employer in the area.

In the 80s and 90s efforts were made to boost tourism in the area. The refurbishment of the town's harbour side, reconstruction of the lock gates, and restoration of buildings would have occurred to attract more visitors.

The A595 road, which runs nearby Whitehaven, was constructed in the 70s, improving transport links and allowing for better economic development.

While most significantly impacting the region in 2001, the effects and fears of this disease, which impacts livestock, were felt in the late 90s, affecting industries in Whitehaven.

The Beacon opened in 1996 as a purpose-built museum to rehouse the Whitehaven Museum collection.

It is owned and operated by Copeland Borough Council, the collection numbers over 30,000 artefacts which include archaeology, geology, social history and decorative art as well as the fine art collection.

It stands to this day as a tourist attraction for visitors to the town.

Some of the photos show Whitehaven's carnival throughout the years.  For many years, every summer, Whitehaven, came alive with a riot of colors, music, and laughter during the much-anticipated carnival. The local Lions Club had always organised the carnival for 27 years.

This annual event became a tradition for locals, a celebration of community spirit, that showcases the town's heritage and residents talents.

Held on the last Saturday of June, the Whitehaven Carnival has a rich history that dates back over a century. It originally began as a modest fancy dress parade in 1897 to celebrate Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubilee.
