'GOOD' progress is being made to revive the city centre's brewing heritage, with hopes for a new brewery to open in time for summer next year.

With internal work well on its way, West Walls Brewing Co is a joint venture between The Halston and Borderlands Brewery, aiming to bring a fresh chapter to Carlisle's beer-making legacy.

The establishment will be based at the Twisted Wheel site at Carlisle's West Walls.

Joe Harrison, of West Walls Brewing Co, said: "We have now got our branding and visuals for the business nailed down.

"We are underway with some of the internal work within the building, it's still very much a building site but we're making some good progress.

"Although we don't have a firm opening date yet, I think it will be spring to early summer 2024," he said.

Whilst the city has Carlisle Brewing Company, located in Kingstown, the city centre has been without a brewery since the closure of Carlisle Brewery on Bridge Street in 1987.

During the latest Carlisle Beer Festival at the Station Hotel over the weekend, Borderlands Brewery's Oyster Stout won over the visitors.

Capturing the top spot out of 48 contenders, it dazzled as the 'Best Beer of the Festival'.

The winning beer is brewed with real oyster shells.

"We are super excited about Borderlands winning and it's really reinforced our view that we are going to have some amazing beers for everyone to try when we open at West Walls with Stuart Campbell (brewer) in our corner.

"Stuart was over the moon that at their first Carlisle Beer festival they won the top prize and he looks forward to many more years at the festival," Joe said.

There are some limited edition bottles of the Oyster Stout available from Borderlands Brewery's website or directly from the brewery in Langholm.
