A vehicle has been seized in Scotby after being found with nitrous oxide which is now a class C drug.
Police have launched an investigation and will be 'increasing visibility in the area'.
From Wednesday, November 9, those found in unlawful possession will face either an unlimited fine, a visible community punishment or a caution - which would appear on their criminal record.
Repeat serious offenders may face a prison sentence of up to two years, an unlimited fine, or both.
A driver has also been reported after a campaign by local police to crack down on illegal drivers near Brampton.

Police have been out conducting stop checks in the area resulting in a driver reported and other drivers being given road side education for minor driving offences when appropriate.
Carlisle Police said: "The vehicle was seized from Scotby, near the Hartley trust playing fields, it had bottles of Nitrous oxide visible which is a class C drug.
"We have launched an investigation into this and will be increasing our visibility in this area. We will be conducting stop searches where appropriate."
