Final preparations are underway for Carlisle's grand Christmas Lights Switch-On happening on Sunday, November 19.

Thousands of twinkling lights are being mounted around the city centre, primarily spanning Scotch Street, English Street, Castle Street, Fisher Street and the Greenmarket areas.

The luminous event will take place from 3pm to 5.30pm adjacent to the Old Town Hall.

Headlining this year's Christmas Lights Switch-On is 'The One and Only' Chesney Hawkes, with an added guest appearance by Carlisle United Manager Paul Simpson.

Sharing in the glory are saxophonist Vicki Watson and family-favourite Robbie Dee, who will be hosting the occasion.

Local groups and performers, including Castle Carrock Primary School, Studio A Dance Company, Committed2Rock Community Choir and Newtown Primary School, will bring a community flavour to the event.

The bright affair, arranged by Cumberland Council, will feature a range of family entertainment to cater of all ages.

The lights will be switched on at 5pm by the Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Abdul Harid and Chair of Cumberland Council, Cllr Carni McCarron-Holmes.

Councillor Anne Quilter, Cumberland Council’s Executive Member for Vibrant and Healthy Places, said: “The countdown is now underway for the Carlisle Christmas Lights Switch-On. It’s set to be another great community event and one not to be missed.”

Other events planned in the Cumberland area include Christmas events in Carlisle, Cockermouth, Whitehaven and Keswick.
