THE House of Fraser building on English Street in Carlisle city centre has sold for around £750,000, according to the estate agents.
The prominent site on Carlisle’s high street, which dates back to 1906, was available to purchase for £750,000 after a previous attempt of a sale at £1.25 million fell through earlier this year.
The 95,446 square foot building, which also houses a branch of Caffe Nero, had been listed by Allsop who said that the shop had “potential for redevelopment and a variety of alternate uses including residential.”
It is understood that House of Fraser had not been paying any rent to the current owners and that the unit was entirely let on a licence agreement to a subsidiary entity of Frasers Group Plc.

At the time of sale, a spokesperson for Cumbria Chamber of Commerce said: “This is a key site in the city centre and has become something of an eyesore, hopefully someone will buy it and turn what is a large and central building to good use and improve the look and feel of the city centre in doing so.”
It is not known what the sale of the building means for the future of House of Fraser.
