THE Carlisle Christmas lights are set to be switched on this Sunday (November 19) and the show promises to be a blast.

The switch-on itself will illuminate what Cumberland Council describes as a 'galaxy' of thousands of sparkling lights in the city centre.

Here are the details...

When and where is it on?

The Carlisle Christmas Lights Switch-on 2023 will be held between 3pm and 5.30pm outside the Old Town Hall in the city centre.

How much does it cost?

The event - which will consist of a 'packed family entertainment programme, to suit all ages' - is free!

What will it include?

The legendary singer Chesney Hawkes will headline this year’s Christmas Lights Switch-On and the programme will also include a guest appearance by Carlisle United manager Paul Simpson!

The line-up also includes saxophonist Vicki Watson, and the event will be hosted by Robbie Dee.

The Christmas Lights Switch-On event will also be a showcase of local community groups and performers including Castle Carrock Primary School, Studio A Dance Company, Committed2Rock Community Choir and Newtown Primary School.

The switch-on itself, with the Mayor of Carlisle, Cllr Abdul Harid and Chair of Cumberland Council, Cllr Carni McCarron-Holmes, will take place at 5pm.

Where can I park?

For anyone bringing a car, Cumberland Council confirmed that all of its car parks will be open for the event, and the Lanes shopping centre has extended its car park's opening hours to 6pm to accommodate visitors.

Nearby, people can park at West Walls car park, Castle car park, Caldew Riverside car park, or the Viaduct car park.

What's the weather going to be like?

The Met Office weather forecast suggests it may be slightly 'damp', with heavy rain predicted throughout Sunday.

However, at the time of writing there is only a 40 per cent chance of precipitation from 3pm, and 30 per cent from 6pm.

With a high of 12C and a low of 8C, dress appropriately and bring an umbrella!
