For today's Nostalgia edition we wanted to take a look back at carnivals in years gone by.

These are carnivals that have taken place across Cumberland over the past few decades.

It is so joyous to see the fun that people in our area had over the years when carnivals have been hosted in towns.

Carnivals of been a popular feature of British life for generations and you definitely know that it's summer when people line the streets to enjoy the festivities.

Carnivals see groups of people from all age groups parading through the street, some singing, some dancing, others in fancy dress, as onlookers watch on and enjoy the parade as it passes through the town.

However, these sorts of events might date back a lot further than you think. They originate from ancient Christian traditions in Europe.

Celebrations like these have occurred in some form from the medieval period, right through the middle ages and have managed to progress into our modern lifestyles.

In many parts of the world carnivals are held in some form or another and in many towns and cities take on massive scales.

Here in Cumbria they may be a little smaller than some of the world renowned ones, but they are still great fun and they really do get people together and give us a sense of community spirit.

We hope that you enjoy this look back at some amazing carnivals that have taken place in our towns and villages over the years.

We can see two photos of an event in Carlisle in 2016, a Gala Queen at Harraby Carnival, children a Botcherby Carnival and people covered in foam at Carlisle Carnival.

The other photos show some people having a lot of fun at Kirkbride Carnival all the way back in 2006.
