A running club from Cumbria has raised thousands of pounds for a motor neurone disease (MND) charity through a 10k event.

The £4,261 raised by Wigton Road Runners, including £1,000 that was raised by Raymond Millburn in a fundraising dinner prior to the run, has been donated to the MND Association.

The October 15 run involved 150 participants, some from as far away as Newcastle.

The Mayor of Wigton, Chris Scott, welcomed the runners at the finish line and handed out finisher medals.

Regional fundraiser for the MND Association, Dominic McDonough, said: "I was absolutely blown away by the sheer passion of all of the organisers to raise money and awareness for us.

"They have raised an incredible amount and it really was such a memorable day, bringing people together to fight this terrible disease."

Medals for the event and its timing were sponsored by Innovia Films and Futamura UK Ltd.

Water and bananas were donated by the local Co-op, and Wigton's town council provided the event facilities at Barton Laws free of charge.

Donated refreshments and cakes from Liz's Country Kitchen were embraced by the runners, who finished on a chilly morning.

The MND Association works to improve access to care, research and campaign for those people living with or affected by MND in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
