IN this edition of nostalgia, we are looking back at past pantomimes that have been performed in Cumbria throughout the years.

As the month of Christmas in here, and ‘most wonderful time of the year’ has arrived, many pantomimes have already kicked off to entertain the masses.

What would Christmas be without a pantomime? Some photos show the members of the Wigton Theatre Club who have been putting on pantomimes in John Peel Theatre in the town for many years. There are a collection of photos from the groups productions.

Back in 1983, the club was presenting the all-time favourite pantomime Aladdin with stalwart Neil Greenall taking the role of Widow Wankee. Dancers from the Celia Baxter School in Carlisle joined the cast on stage.

In more recent times the Christmas pantomime was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, oh yes it was!

The club was formed back in the 1950s and continues to thrive with the support of many dedicated members and friends.

Other photos from this nostalgia collection take a look back at other pantomimes from various other groups in years gone by. Some of the highlights include a 1975 performance from Carlisle’s Harraby School, Cockermouth Amateur Dramatic Society’s recent performance of Robin Hood and an old performance of Aladdin at Houghton Village Hall.

We also see a more recent photo from 2008, as the Whitehaven Theatre Group perform.

From booing the 'baddie, and cheering the goodie' or perhaps your parents let you buy one of the slightly aggressive light up toys, many of us have lovely memories of going to the pantomime.
