IN this edition of nostalgia, we are looking back at snowfall that Cumbria has experienced in the past.

This week, thousands have been left without power after snow fell across Cumbria took rendered road closures, and left people stranded.

Police and other emergency services are continuing to warn people of the dangers.

The multi-agency response to the snow continues as the county experiences further adverse weather and continued power outage.

Power cuts were experienced across Cumbria over the weekend, as temperatures fell below zero, the county experienced an outbreak of snow.

About 7,000 homes and businesses lost power after the storm. Police declared a major incident on Saturday evening, with about 200 vehicles stuck and stranded people forced to use temporary accommodation.

The history of snow in Cumbria and indeed in the UK in general, can be seen in its impact on local communities, transport, and agriculture.

For instance, the winter of 1947 was one of the snowiest winters in the UK history and it certainly affected Cumbria. Another example is the winter of 1962-1963, also known as the 'Big Freeze', which was one of the coldest winters on record in the United Kingdom.

In more recent history, the snowfall in Cumbria in December 2010 was exceptional.  Snow accumulations of up to 30 centimeters were recorded at low levels with much larger amounts on higher ground in the Lakes.

Additionally, in February 2018, Cumbria experienced heavy snowfall due to the "Beast from the East".
