PUPILS at a local primary school are excited to give back to the community in the form of festive cheer at an upcoming free concert at Carlisle Cathedral.

Cumwhinton Primary School's choir will be performing at the venue on December 12,  from 2pm to 2.45pm, with the event being open to everybody.

Headteacher Jon Stewart expressed 'immense' pride in the efforts of the students and the collaborative support from the cathedral.

"The children have put a huge amount of work into this, and so have Carlisle Cathedral.

"I'm immensely proud as a headteacher.

"The children have given up their lunchtimes where they could be out with their friends to be part of the school choir, learn these songs, and ultimately give back to the community," he said.

Under the guidance of musical director Ed Taylor, the 'magical' concert will feature traditional hymns, Christmas carols as well as poetry from the students.

The school choir comprises students from Years 3 to 6, emphasising inclusivity.

"It's an open and inclusive choir; we don't do auditions. If children want to be a part of the choir, they can. The children we have involved have come from different backgrounds, abilities, and ages. We welcome everybody," Jon said.

The headteacher said the excitement from the kids themselves is palpable.

"There's a ringing of hymns and songs throughout the corridor during the school day. Even if they aren't practicing in a formal way, they are practicing in the corridors.

"It's a free concert, it's there for everybody.

"At this time of year, it's about spreading that festive joy back to the community who always give to us," he said.

Donations will be welcome to help support both Carlisle Cathedral and the musical life of Cumwhinton Primary School.
