Grassroots projects are benefitting from additional funding.

After its first investment round, the Petteril Community Panel funded four local initiatives this week, ranging from outdoor learning sessions to a community radio station.

Managed by the Cumberland Council, the panel directs funds towards grass roots projects with input from residents and local partners.

Eden Rivers Trust, which hosts outdoor learning sessions and community activities across Petteril's wards, received £5,516.

Age UK Carlisle and Eden was granted £5,000 to support a programme that offers shopping services and other assistance to help older people remain self-reliant in their homes for an extended period.

Similarly, Carlisle Radio FM was given £3,750 for a community radio station that will provide local news and entertainment for Carlisle communities.

Supporting scientific achievements among Carlisle's youth, the Rotary Club of Carlisle was awarded £300 to aid in the organisation of a Technology Tournament.

Chairman of Petteril Community Panel, Councillor Cyril Weber, said: "I am delighted we have made the first investments from this new community panel.

"All of them are fantastic grass roots projects that will make a tangible difference."

Deputy Leader of Cumberland Council and Petteril Panel Vice-Chair, Councillor Lisa Brown, said: "Community panels are a new way of working and I think they are already bearing fruit."

The next deadline for Petteril support applications is January 25.
