A 5-year-old squirrel scout from Carlisle has been awarded an unsung hero award from Chief Scout, Bear Grylls.

Every year the event recognises 20 young people aged 4-25 who have gone above and beyond – whether that be their efforts in raising money for charity, saving lives, or being a pillar for those around them in adversity.

The winners were all UK Scouts who've shown scouting values, courage, kindness and the 'never give up' spirit which is a term coined by the Chief Scout himself.

Thomas Hampton age 5, has always been a fantastic friend and always helps new children settle in to Squirrels, according to the Scouts.

“He also helped our leaders understand what children his age were like when the Squirrel Drey was first set up,” a local spokesperson said.

“Nothing is ever too much for Thomas and he always give 100%. He recently took part in first sleepover and helped the other Squirrels. Thomas is now a confident young person thanks to Scouts.”

As well as their award and meeting with Bear Grylls, the young people were given free access to the whole adventure centre for the day - where they were able to try a range of activities like Scuba Diving, Archery and High Ropes.

Each young person was able to bring parents, carers, or other family members along to enjoy the fun too.

Bear Grylls, Chief Scout said: “Each year I am blown away by the sheer courage, strength and of course the ‘never give up attitude’ each young person showcases.

“You are what makes Scouting, you are real-life representations of what Scouting is and you are our true Heroes.”

Thomas said: “When I grow up, I want to be just like Bear.”
